I didn’t want to dive into this subject because it
is broad and I definitely don’t have all the facts. The topic of discussion I
would like to broach tonight is less about the T. Martin and G. Zimmerman case
and more about the social impact. Everyone knows that Mr. Zimmerman was
acquitted by a jury of women. No one was there that night but a dead black teenager and a free white man. The jury did their job based on the evidence and
witnesses. Mr. Zimmerman was the only living witness. I am not quarreling with
this indictment. Like most folk, I believe this case was the easy out. The jury
ruled and yes they acquitted based on the law and evidence.
I want to speak to the broader issue at hand and not dust this matter off and sweep it under the rug. No Sir, I am asking that we as a
society look inward and recognize the hypocrisy of this case. We stand for
democracy, freedom and equality and yet a young black man did not have the
right to walk to the store without the presumption of guilt. Regardless of what
was the motivating factors for Mr. Zimmerman to ignore police instruction and
stand down, the decision resulted in death. A young man died that was at
the beginning of his life. Someone who was not given the opportunity to have
children, marry or just live. My heart goes out to the family of this young man.
If it had been my child, I would be devastated at this point. I pray for them
and all of us. I pray that we all learn the true meaning of democracy, freedom
and equality for all of our citizens black, white, red, yellow and brown. I
pray we all recognize this as a right for all individuals and we realize it within
each of our souls not just something that is truncated and excused by a jury's
decision.
This should be an act of contrition.
Peace Diana
