The Back Door
Fall envelops short colder days,
there are hints of melancholy mixed in with cold rain.
Coffee in hand, looking out the back door,
mesmerized; a cigarette ash drops to the floor.
Time echoes pure…
laughter as children play,
dogs barking at holes freshly made,
a clubhouse swarmed as Indians invade,
and a trampoline set under a Maples’ shade.
And there were…
birthday piƱatas’ bashed, as candy fell,
overnights and stories they had to tell.
A bass boat rotting along the fence line,
family barbeques with images seizing time.
Silence forecloses…
as a tear or two rolls splattering the floor,
where broods that twirled, dance no more.
Coffee now cold; she quietly turns way,
tolerant to circumstances in a dissimilar day.
